Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. The ham patties shall be preserved, packaged, packed, and case marked in accordance with good commercial practice. The contractor shall select 18 or 22 ham patties to be packaged in each can. Every can shall have the same number of patties. The patties shall be interleaved and be covered top and bottom with parchment paper. The parchment paper shall separate the product from the sides of the can. Each filled and sealed can shall be vacummed packed. Failure of the can to meet the vacuum requirement shall cause rejection of the lot. Shipping containers shall comply with the National Motor Freight Classification or Uniform Freight Classification, as applicable.
For Department of Defense procurements.
The following requirements are applicable when specified by the contracting office:
A. Commercial packaging. Same as for commercial practices (see Preservation packaging, packing, labeling, and marking).
B. Commercial packing. Twelve cans of product shall be packed in a fiberboard container complying with Uniform Freight Classification or National Motor Freight Classification, as applicable, except metal fasteners shall not be used in the final closure of the box. The cans shall be packed on end, four in length, three in width, and one in depth within the box.
C. Export packaging. The contractor shall select 18 or 22 ham patties to be packaged in each can. Every can shall have the same number of patties. The patties shall be packaged in an open-top style, round metal can, with a soldered or welded side seam and compound-lined, double-seamed ends. The can shall be made throughout from not less than 0.25 pound per base box electrolytic tin plate. The can shall have a sufficient base plate weight and e roper to protect the product during shipment and storage. The entire inside area of the can shall be enameled. The can shall be coated overall on the outside with a coating conforming to me 1 or, when specified, Type III of TTC-495. The patties shall be interleaved and covered top and bottom with parchment paper. The parchment paper shall separate the patties from the sides of the can. Each filled and sealed can shall have a vacuum of not less than 10 inches of mercury at time of closing. Failure of any can to meet the vacuum requirements shall cause rejection of the lot.
